Packing & Storage Tips

The following packing tips are designed to help you wrap, pack, box and store your goods in self-storage so they are stored in a safe and efficient manner. The more efficiently you can pack your self-storage space the smaller space you will require. A smaller space will save you money!

  • Start with the small stuff.
  • Wrap precious items in protective products such as tissue paper and butchers paper. Clearly mark items fragile.
  • Tape your storage boxes up well. Heavy-duty boxes are best for stacking.
  • Do not overload the boxes, particularly the large cartons.
  • Pack the heavier items into small boxes.
  • Dismantle as many pieces of furniture as possible, this makes it easier to store them.
  • Pack electronic equipment with bubble wrap to prevent movement.
  • Avoid using newspaper to wrap as the ink can rub off. We recommend butchers paper.
  • Large objects can be stored on their sides to save space, so remember to wrap them in protective covers.
  • Defrost your fridge several hours before your move, this will avoid water damage.

Mark your boxes on their sides as well as tops. Tape a list of contents onto your boxes for easy retrieval of goods.

The following storing tips are designed to assist you when moving into your self-storage space.

  • Start with objects you know you definitely will not need.
  • Place large, solid items into your storage space first. Stack small items, especially boxes, on top of large items.
  • Stand long items on their side if possible. Remember it’s a Big Box so try to use the height of the unit.
  • Use the space inside your wardrobe to stack boxes and bags.
  • Use one sidewall of the space to stack boxes only as high as possible.
  • Leave the door to your fridge open.
  • Leave items that you want to access at the front of the space.
  • Use mothballs, to protect blankets, clothing and linen.
  • Do not store perishables or flammable items.
  • If you do store lawn mowers or motorbikes please ensure that you empty the petrol.
  • Cover all furniture with dustsheets. For details of protective coverings and other packaging materials
