The following packing tips are designed to help you wrap, pack, box and store your goods in self-storage so they are stored in a safe and efficient manner. The more efficiently you can pack your self-storage space the smaller space you will require. A smaller space will save you money!
- Start with the small stuff.
- Wrap precious items in protective products such as tissue paper and butchers paper. Clearly mark items fragile.
- Tape your storage boxes up well. Heavy-duty boxes are best for stacking.
- Do not overload the boxes, particularly the large cartons.
- Pack the heavier items into small boxes.
- Dismantle as many pieces of furniture as possible, this makes it easier to store them.
- Pack electronic equipment with bubble wrap to prevent movement.
- Avoid using newspaper to wrap as the ink can rub off. We recommend butchers paper.
- Large objects can be stored on their sides to save space, so remember to wrap them in protective covers.
- Defrost your fridge several hours before your move, this will avoid water damage.
Mark your boxes on their sides as well as tops. Tape a list of contents onto your boxes for easy retrieval of goods.
The following storing tips are designed to assist you when moving into your self-storage space.
- Start with objects you know you definitely will not need.
- Place large, solid items into your storage space first. Stack small items, especially boxes, on top of large items.
- Stand long items on their side if possible. Remember it’s a Big Box so try to use the height of the unit.
- Use the space inside your wardrobe to stack boxes and bags.
- Use one sidewall of the space to stack boxes only as high as possible.
- Leave the door to your fridge open.
- Leave items that you want to access at the front of the space.
- Use mothballs, to protect blankets, clothing and linen.
- Do not store perishables or flammable items.
- If you do store lawn mowers or motorbikes please ensure that you empty the petrol.
