LAS VEGAS — Quantum Corp. and Acronis launched new products specifically aimed at VMware backup and recovery today at the opening day of VMworld 2011. Quantum brought out the vmPRO 4000 appliance based on technology it acquired from Pancetera Software in June and Acronis rolled out vmPROtect 6 backup software.

The launches come as more organizations are turning to data backup and recovery products aimed specifically at VMware, such as Quest Software’s vRanger and Veeam Software’s Backup & Replication. Every major backup vendor has made some move to optimize VMware backup and recovery.

Quantum’s vmPRO 4000 is Quantum’s DXi 4500 data deduplication backup appliance for remote offices with Pancetera’s virtual appliance that optimizes virtual machine backup. Quantum executives say they plan to add the Pancetera software to the DXi midrange and enterprise appliances as well as StorNext appliances for file archiving.

LEARN MORE ABOUT VMWARE BACKUP AND RECOVERY
Listen to a podcast about VMware backup
Read about new features for VMware backup and recovery
Learn about VMware backup tools
“This is the first love child between Pancetera and Quantum DXi,” said Henrik Rosendahl, Quantum VP of virtualization and former Pancetera CEO.

Pancetera’s software serves as a backup application that runs on a guest virtual appliance. The vmPRO 4000 uses Pancetera’s Smart Read technology to move the VMs. Smart Read removes virtual machine disk files that are redundant or no longer in use to reduce I/O. Because it retains the VMDK format, the vmPRO 4000 is compatible with any backup software.

“We put a file system on top of your virtual storage and turn all VMs into files,” Rosendahl said.

The vmPRO 4000 will be available in October. It will cost $13,750 for the 2 TB version and $24,750 for 4 TB. The prices are a 10% premium over the DXi4500 models. Quantum chose to bundle Pancetera technology as a virtual appliance on the DXi instead of making it available as a software option, but existing DXi4500 customers can load the Pancetera software as a virtual appliance on an ESX server.

Enterprise Strategy Group analyst David Chapa said the Pancetera software will be a good fit for a wide range of Quantum backup and disaster recovery products.

“This could be an interesting integrated approach and a way for Quantum to provide another layer of support for virtualized environments,” he said. “It’s also a good fit for disaster recovery because of its replication. As customers move from a physical world to a virtualized world, disaster recovery and business continuity becomes daunting. It’s easier with replication built in.”

Acronis extends backup and recovery software offerings

Acronis vmPROtect 6 is for VMware virtual servers using ESX and ESXi hypervisors. The software can be installed as a virtual appliance and offers image and file-level recovery. It has built-in data deduplication and compression, and supports 256-bit AES encryption. Acronis vmPROtect is price at $499 per CPU with unlimited physical to virtual migrations.

Acronis already sells Acronis Backup & Recovery 11 Virtual Edition (ABR) for virtual and physical server backup. But ABR was originally developed for physical machines with virtual support added. Izzy Azeri, GM of the Americas for Acronis, said there is a strong market for products that only protect virtual servers. Acronis is aiming vmPROtect 6 at virtual machine administrators while ABR is for backup admins.

“We believe an audience is looking for a virtual backup-only product,” Azeri said. “We wanted something that’s a lot more tailored for that audience. For customers already using ABR Virtual Edition with VMware, we give them another option.”

He said customers can use both products, but they would have to run separate backup jobs.

Other products launched today at VMworld include:

EMC Virtual Storage Integrator

EMC rolled out Virtual Storage Integrator (VSI) 5, a free VMware vCenter plug-in that lets customers map virtual machines to storage and enables provisioning for EMC Symmetrix VMAX and VNX storage arrays. VSI 5 supports VMware vSphere 5.

HP Virtual Systems for VMware

Hewlett-Packard rolled out HP VirtualSystem for VMware, which optimizes the VirtualSystem bundle that include HP storage, servers and networking for VMware.

SunGard Availability Services Recover2Cloud

SunGard Availability Services added Recover2Cloud disaster recovery services for server replication and vaulting. Recover2Cloud for Server Replication uses asynchronous server-based replication and is aimed at virtual, physical and cloud-based applications requiring recovery in less than four hours. Recover2Cloud for Vaulting restores data from an online vault and delivers application recovery in less than 24 hours. Pricing for SunGard Recover2Cloud services starts at $150 per server per month.

Coraid EtherFlash array

Coraid rolled out the CoraidEtherFlash array, consisting of Coraid’s EtherDrive SRX storage arrays, solid-state drives and the vendor’s new CorOS operating system optimized for managing data on SSDs. Coraid CEO Kevin Brown said EtherFlash arrays provide over 200,000 IOPS starting at under $8 per GB. He said the vendor supports several single-level cell (SLC) and multi-level cell (MLC) SSD drives, and is planning to add automatic tiering and caching capabilities. Coraid arrays are based on the ATA over Ethernet (AoE) protocol.

Hauwai Symantec’s PowerSteering

Huawei Symantec launched PowerSteering, a suite of VMware plug-ins for VMware APIs to let customers manage its storage and backup devices through a VMware console. The plug-ins include support for three of the vStorage APIs for Array Integration (VAAI) primitives—full copy, block zeroing and scalable lock management.

Virtensys VIO-4010, 4012

Virtensys Ltd. launched the VIO-4010, an addition to the PCIe-based VIO-4000 I/O Virtualization (IOV) appliance family. The VIO-4010 uses Micron P3000 100 GB and 200 GB enterprise solid state drives (SSDs) and supports from 800 GB to 1.6 TB of total capacity. Virtensys said it will also have a VIO-4012 model with Micron P320h PCIe-based SSDs by the end of the year.

CommVault reference architecture for VMware, Dell EqualLogic SAN

CommVault delivered the first of several planned reference architectures for its Simpana backup and data management software running on popular storage systems. The first architecture is based on VMware software, Dell servers and EqualLogic iSCSI storage arrays, and Simpana 9 modules for backup, recovery and archiving. CommVault plans reference architectures for NetApp FlexPod and EMC Vblock arrays running VMware as part of its Virtual Infrastructure Reference Architecture Leaders (VIRAL) channel program.

Hewlett-Packard (HP) Co. today upgraded the 3PAR storage array platform that it acquired a year ago for $2.35 billion and launched HP Peer Motion federated storage software for moving data non-disruptively between systems.

The new HP P10000 3PAR Storage System includes the V400 and V800 models that replace the T Class at the high end of the 3PAR line. The V800 scales to 1,920 drives and 1.6 PB raw – doubling the capacity of the current T800. The V400 and V800 support Fibre Channel (FC), SATA and solid-state drives (SSDs) out of the gate, with support for 2.5-inch SAS drives planned for 2012.

HP director of storage product marketing Sean Kinney described Peer Motion as “distributed volume management across homogenous systems using peer-to-peer communication. It enables data movement across like storage systems, and you can do it on any 3PAR system.”

More on federated storage
Storage federation will be a big part of the future
Vplex federated storage creates a stir
EMC expands Vplex federated storage
HP Peer Motion appears to be an answer to EMC Corp.’s Vplex that launched last year. EMC this year added the ability to asynchronously replicate application data over thousands of miles between two data centers. HP doesn’t have that distance capability yet.

Peer Motion enables customers to migrate data from retiring arrays to new systems without downtime within a metro area. It also enables federated thin provisioning, which moves application data to systems with available capacity if an array is full.

Kinney said HP’s LeftHand iSCSI SAN platform already supports federated storage through its SANiQ software, snapshots and remote replication. Peer Motion is a separately licensed application for the P10000 3PAR line.

Evaluator Group analyst John Webster said this type of feature will soon become “must-have” for enterprise storage arrays, although only EMC and HP have it now. “EMC was the first to step forward, and now others are responding,” he said. “Federated storage lets you move applications without disruption. It becomes something you can do in an automated way for disaster recovery [DR], but you can also think of it as letting an application follow the sun if you’re a global company.”

HP executives consider 3PAR their flagship storage platform, spanning the midrange through enterprise segments. The vendor continues to sell its enterprise XP9000 series built on technology from Hitachi and its EVA midrange family, but HP reported that 3PAR system revenue has doubled over last year when 3PAR was an independent company. Overall, HP storage revenue grew only eight percent year-over-year last quarter, which makes it clear that its storage future is built around 3PAR.

HP’s 3PAR success prompted EMC to come out with a VMAXe Symmetrix system to compete with 3PAR and IBM’s XIV among enterprise storage arrays that aren’t targeted at mainframe connectivity.

Webster said he expects HP to get rid of its XP9000 and EVA lines — and concentrate on the 3PAR family. “3PAR is growing at a rate of 100 percent per year as an HP property, so it seems to me like the battle’s on against EMC and NetApp,” he said.

Kinney pointed out that HP has also made 3PAR storage a key piece of other HP services and bundles, such as its VirtualSystem and CloudSystem offerings. He added that 3PAR will continue its T Class platform for about a year and retain its F Class midrange 3PAR family.
